A New Localization System for Improved Performance
Over the past year, WordPress contributors have deeply analyzed the performance of the existing i18n system, leading to the creation of the “Performant Translations” feature plugin. This revamped system offers significantly enhanced performance. After testing by thousands of beta testers and a merge announcement last year, this new library is now included in WordPress 6.5.
This new library loads binary .mo files faster and uses less memory. It also supports loading multiple locales at the same time, thus speeding up locale switching. Moreover, it supports translations contained in PHP files, avoiding a binary file format and leveraging OPCache if available.
New .l10n.php Translation File Format
When downloading language packs from WordPress.org or from TranslationsPress a new .l10n.php file will be available in addition to the usual .mo and .po files. If a .mo translation file has a corresponding .l10n.php file, the latter will be loaded instead, making the process even faster and less memory-intensive.
